Art Market Tour London with Cindy Lawford

Art Market in St James’s

There has never been a better time to buy contemporary art.   Though naturally we think about buying art just to experience the joys of looking at it thousands of times, it is worth considering that there is serious money to be made these days on contemporary art, more than ever before.  This tour aims to provide a good understanding of the risks and benefits of buying art.

With both contemporary and older art buying possibilities in mind, I will take you to a wide variety of art retailers in Mayfair and St. James’s.  We start at the Maddox Gallery, the first gallery in London linked to an art investment consultancy.  Maddox's consultants focus on identifying the emerging artists most likely to make work that will turn a nice profit, boasting a nearly 30% profit increase in works bought and sold in 2017 alone.

We will also visit one of the major auction houses nearby -- Sotheby's, Phillips or Christie's -- to learn about how the auction house places monetary values on the works it is selling and how those prices typically compare to those at galleries.  A stroll along famous Cork Street will take us to the Dadiani gallery, the first in London to accept cryptocurrencies.  We hope also to step inside Messum’s, specialising in British artists, particulary Impressionists; and Flowers, devoted to contemporary painting, sculpture and photography.

A stop at the Royal Academy will also be included, where we will find out about how the Academy markets and sells work by Academicians and its own students.  In St. James's, some of the galleries we may visit include Stephen Ongpin's, to see Old Masters drawings;  the Illustration Cupboard for Children's book illustrations and political cartoons; the Alan Cristea Gallery, where we will hear about buying contemporary prints; and Philip's Mould's vast portrait gallery.
